Police 'wire' recorded Catholic provincial's effort to dissuade abuse victims from reporting

August 20, 2012

An Australian man has revealed that he secretly taped a meeting with the local head of a Catholic religious order, as part of a police investigation into sex-abuse complaints.

Peter Murphy, who has reported that he was abused by a member of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, wore a concealed tape recorder to a meeting with Father Brian Gallagher, the Australia provincial of that order. Murphy told the Sydney Morning Herald that at the meeting, Father Gallagher encouraged victims of a pedophile priest not to contact police about the abuse.

The secret tape was produced in 1994. Its existence has only now come to light.
