The late Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski, the powerful primate of Poland, declined to have his name proposed for the papacy during the conclave of 1978, and suggested Cardinal Karol Wojtyla instead, according to a historian who had access to Cardinal Wyszynski’s journal. In a book newly published in Poland, entitled 1978: The Election of Pope John Paul II, author Peter Raina reports that Cardnal Wyszynski considered himself too old to be considered as a possible Pontiff.
