Austrian cardinal plans to meet with dissident priests
July 14, 2011
Vienna’s Cardinal Christoph Schönborn plans to meet with a group of dissident Austrian priests in several weeks, according to a spokesman for the Vienna archdiocese. Cardinal Schönborn said that he was shocked by the open defiance of Church authority in the public statement by 300 priests who joined in a “Call to Disobedience” released in June. But his spokesman said that neither the cardinal nor any other Austrian bishop had discussed disciplinary action against the priests.
The cardinal will meet late in August, or possibly in September, with representatives of the dissident group, the spokesman said.
