New Archbishop of Berlin faces heavy opposition

The newly appointed Archbishop of Berlin, Rainer Maria Woelki, faces daunting opposition from dissidents and secularists in the German capital.

A Reuters report gives special prominence to the complaints of gay activists that Archbishop-elect Woelki is too conservative, because he upholds Church teachings on human sexuality. Reuters treats the prelate with suspicion, despite his conciliatory statements—thus illustrating the challenges that he will face.
