WHITE SMOKE!! April 19, 2005

White smoke has risen from the Sistine Chapel, indicating that the conclave has chosen a new Pope.

The smoke began rising just before 6 pm, Rome time-- indicating that the successful vote probably came on the first afternoon ballot. Vatican officials had told observers that ballots would be burned after a second round of voting, probably closer to 7.

CWN will follow with results as soon as possible.
