Description:

St. Augustine of Hippo, Bishop, Confessor, Doctor of the Church, one of the greatest intellects the world has ever known, was born in 354 at Tagaste, in northern Africa; through the prayers of his mother St. Monica and the teachings of St. Ambrose of Milan, he was converted from the Manichean heresey and a disordered life, and thereafter grew rapidly as a Christian apologist; in 396 became Bishop of Hippo and during his 35-year episcopate wrote the famous Confessions and De Civitate Dei and vast other works, was perhaps the greatest of the four Latin Doctors; lived in common with his clergy or clerks, whence the origin of the Augustinian Order (the Rule of St. Augustine, making him one of the four great founders of religious orders, is drawn from the 211th epistle which he wrote for nuns and which was later adapted for men); died 430, Patron of Theologians; Feast August 28, dp. in Latin Ch.; by Augustinians feast kept October 11, dp. 1 cl. oct. This litany is approved, and from Orate with permission.
