Thank you for your letter of Feb. 7, 2000, with which you enclosed a draft copy of the norms for televising Mass in the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama.

This Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments much appreciates this gesture, which confirms the fruitful and cordial nature of the discussions that took place during your recent visit to the offices of this congregation.

The congregation warmly commends Your Excellency for the decision to draw up such a text and considers it a most useful pastoral instrument for the regulation of telecasts of the sacred liturgy. The text is sensitive to the essential meaning of the sacred liturgy, to the requirements of correct liturgical celebration as defined by the liturgical books, to the human needs and circumstances of those who benefit spiritually from such celebrations and their televised transmission, and the technical features linked to the medium.

Thanking Your Excellency once again for having been so kind as to consult the congregation on these questions and with all prayerful good wishes for your episcopal ministry, I remain sincerely yours in Christ.
