A race of people whose ancestral home was in Asia and Africa, and reputed descendants of Shem, son of Noah. In historic times all of Western Asia except Asia Minor was Semitic, and philologists divide the race into four main groups: Babylonian-Assyrian, Chanaanite, Aramaic, and Arabian. Their original home was probably Arabia.
