CRUX GEMMATA
Symbol known as the jeweled cross, suggesting a living tree with growing flowers and leaves adorning it. Jeweled, it appeared as an emblem of victory after the Edict of Milan in A.D. 313. From the ends of the crossbar were suspended the Greek letters alpha and omega.
