BARSABBAS

One of the two candidates nominated to succeed Judas as the twelfth Apostle (Acts 1:23-26). Tradition holds that Barsabbas and Matthias were among the seventy-two disciples chosen by Christ (Luke 10:1). Lots were drawn and Matthias was chosen. (Etym. Aramaic bar sa'ba', son of Sabbas.)
