ARROWS

Single symbols, with the heart, to emphasize the wounding for live, of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the suffering heart of Mary. St. Augustine (354-430) holds his heart pierced by a single arrow to indicate his great love for Christ. St. Edmund the Martyr (841-70) also has an arrow as emblem. Arranged in a bundle, grasped in the hand, arrows identify St. Sebastian (d. 288), whose attempted martyrdom is represented by the many darts shot at him by the hired archers.
