On November 6, a group of 26 prominent Islamic scholars in Saudi Arabia issued a pronouncement that good Muslims in Iraq should fight against the US occupation. They added a fatwa against anyone who assists the provisional government.

Oh, you didn't hear about that? Hmmm. Maybe the US State Department didn't send out a press release.

Yesterday, the Saudi ambassador to the US announced that his government did not support the clerics' statement. That's reassuring, since we Americans know that the Saudis are our trustworthy allies.

The Saudi government may not support the statement. But it does support the scholars who issued the statement; they're all on the state payroll. Still. Even now, as they urge Iraqis to kill American soldiers.
