I suppose it's only a matter of time before the Thought Police finally catch up with Amherst Professor Hadley Arkes and drag him off to his dungeon. Before that hour arrives, however, he always has something worthwhile to teach us. This from today's offering at The Catholic Thing:

Fathers and daughters are not demeaned, their equality is not rejected, their love not denied, when they are barred from marrying one another. And it is telling-- is it not? -- that we never hear Rep. Barney Frank asking, “How does it threaten anyone’s marriage that a mother and son who love one another may live as husband and wife?” Apparently, when people regard the marriage as simply wrong in principle, they stop asking the question of just how it would hurt anyone else if the law permitted a mother and son to marry.

As Arkes knows full well, the ardors of sexual anarchists are such that, when it serves their cause, all traditional prohibitions are denounced as taboos and all taboos denounced as relics of irrational hatred. The burden of proof has shifted onto the moralist, who often appears crabbed and oafish in conflict with the fearless innovator. That German chap who ate the chum he met in the Gay Cannibals chat-room will no doubt come to be regarded as a new Galileo, murmuring as he leaves the court of his condemnation, "Eppure, non si muove." His lover, that is.
