When defeat means victory

By Phil Lawler ( bio - articles - email ) | Nov 09, 2004

At the Boston Globe, the dominant cultural organ for the People's Republic of Massachusetts, the effort to re-define reality continues.

Today, a pair of gay-rights lobbyists do their level best to explain away last week's election results. It's an impressive effort.

Sure, the voters in 11 different states approved efforts to bar same-sex "marriage." But there were also 3 notoriously liberal states where the voters did not approve such measures. Of course, those measures weren't on the ballot on those 3 liberal states; in fact the authors did their utmost to make sure the people of Massachusetts would never vote on the issue. Still,..

Moreover, the authors have found two cases in which an entrenched incumbent who favored same-sex unions defeated an electoral challenge. Now the news that a powerful incumbent won re-election is about as exciting as a report that water is flowing downhill. Still,...

What we did learn from this election is that if voters have the opportunity to really explore the issue, they move toward marriage equality, not away from it..

And to think you had the foolish idea that when they voted against same-sex unions, the people of those 11 states were expressing their opposition to same-sex unions! If you read the Globe more often, you might get over those silly notions.
