Jack Dunn has the best job going: PR flak for Boston College. Not the editors of the National Enquirer, not Kim Jong Il's politburo, not the judges of the Miss Teen USA pageant enjoy such complete independence from reality, such sublime irresponsibility. Dunn works in a world of almost pure fiction, yet the fire engines he gets to play with are real trucks with real bells and lights. Check out this statement in response to the protest that, by their claim that snuffing Schiavo was good thing, BC prof Fr. John Paris, S.J., and his pals let down the Catholic side.
"Boston College is firmly committed to its Jesuit, Catholic mission and heritage," the college said in its statement. "Accordingly, its faculty members openly engage the issues of the day, especially those concerning faith and culture."
See what I mean? Now that is a great day's work! Imagine the laughter ringing off the walls of the office when the first and final draft came off the printer -- not a dry seat in the house, I'll wager. By way of purely theoretical gamesmanship, it would be fun to ask if any BC employee could take any position on any issue in any circumstances for which the "mission and heritage" macro on Dunn's mighty Toshiba wouldn't suffice to answer critics. Some guys have got it made.
