The truth will out

By Phil Lawler ( bio - articles - email ) | Dec 08, 2003

Howard Dean is now a fulll-time politician, but he was once a full-time physiican. The leading Democratic presidential candidate served an internship with Planned Parenthood, but insists that he never actually performed an abortion.

"I did not perform abortions, I'm a medical doctor," Dean told the media.

That's a fascinating formulation, for two reasons:

  1. Proponents of abortion (and Dean is emphatically one of them) always tell us that it is a medical procedure. By their/his logic, there's no reason a "medical doctor" shouldn't do abortions.
  2. Dean professes his determination to ensure that women have the "right" to abort their children. So it's curious that he's so quick to distance himself from the people actually provide that service.
  3. Dean's revealing choice of words confirms a message that Mark Crutcher has been emphasizing for several years now: Real doctors don't like to be associated with abortionists. And that's a very good thing. Now, if we can only arrange things so that real politicians don't like to be associated with abortion proponents....
