Maureen Dowd has written another wearisome diatribe against the Church (if you really must read it, look here, and don't blame me; I warned you), comparing the Catholic hierarchy to the Saudi government.

There is a similarity: both systems are all-male. Got that, Maureen. Thanks for the perceptive observation.

Ms. Dowd once wondered how intelligent women could be content under the Saudi regime, until she had the utterly novel idea that she too lived in a repressive institution: the Catholic Church.

Here's a thought: Let those bright Saudi women live under the rules of the Catholic Church, while Dowd moves to Riyadh and lives under Shari'a law. Schedule another conversation after a couple of years, and let them compare notes. Even Dowd might notice a few distinctions.

(Meantime, the rest of us wouldn't groan quite so much over the Times op-ed page.)
