In a message to the priests of his Milwaukee archdiocese, Archbishop Timothy Dolan reports from the USCCB meeting in Baltimore, and asks them not to pay attention to less sympathetic observers:
I would ask you not to listen to reports about our sessions that come from two camps...
Those camps consist of the bishops' critics, from left and right, and the archbishop's description of the 2nd camp sounds suspiciously familiar:
Then the other side contends that all we bishops want to do is water-down doctrine, continue to de-sacralize the liturgy, and dilute Catholic teaching to appease trendy secular culture, instead of bravely and prophetically standing up to the pagans all around us. [emphasis added]
Lest someone, somewhere suggest that Uncle Di belongs in this 2nd camp of critics, let me clearly state that in my view, the US bishops did not continue to desacralize the liturgy this week. They left things just as they were.
