Dutch psychiatrist Dr. Gerard van den Aardweg has some interesting (if badly translated) ideas on why the Doomsday Doc is on target. Slate's William Saletan contends it "exposes the deeply rooted, incorrigible antigay tendencies of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, aka Pope Benedict XVI." USCCB president William Skylstad has a deftly-worded, positive-sounding, but ultimately evasive statement urging "bishops and major superiors to make this Instruction the occasion for a comprehensive discussion with seminary rectors," etc. Former Palm Beach Bishop Anthony O'Connell was unavailable for comment.
