The Archdiocese of Detroit has issued updated guidelines for clergy, employees, and volunteers, as a supplement to its Protecting God's Children program. They make a reasonable start, using language uneasily adapted from the Dental Hygienists Professional Standards guide ...

* Never engage in sexual intimacies with the persons they counsel. This includes consensual and nonconsensual conduct, forced physical conduct, inappropriate sexual remarks.

... but then return to familiar moral territory where they obviously feel more confident.

* Volunteers must not smoke or use tobacco products in presence of children or youths.

Protecting God’s Children. It's a comfort to know that the Archdiocese is taking pro-active steps to insure a smoke- and aggravated sexual battery-free environment for the most vulnerable among us. Who can argue with that?
