out of step

By Diogenes ( articles ) | Apr 11, 2005

Bad news, friends. The New York Times has announced that "the Vatican's teachings on a number of subjects, including contraception, the ordination of women, and homosexuality, are out of step with the beliefs and lifestyles of most American Catholics."

No doubt you're as horrified as I am to learn that the Holy Spirit is not dancing to the beat supplied by MTV.

But don't panic: The Church could get back "in step" by carefully following the editorial advice of the New York Times.

Or, just possibly... Dare I even hint it?

Let's put it this way: On one hand you have 2,000 years of tradition, the witness of the saints and martyrs, the Word of the Gospel, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. On the other you have the "beliefs and lifestyles" of a generation of Catholics whose religious instruction has consisted mostly of tracing smiley-faces.

Who's "out of step" with whom?
