Terry Mattingly at GetReligion has persuaded Ken Woodward and the Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics & Public Policy to let him post Woodward's exceptionally informative article on the language used by the New York Times in coverage of the abortion controversy. The pro-abortion advocacy position of the NYT -- as indeed of every major U.S. news source -- is not in doubt. What is revealing is the extent to which the Times's editors are prepared to sacrifice clarity, brevity, and intelligibility in headlines and news stories in order to "frame the narrative" in a politically advantageous manner.
