The Pope’s instructions to ignore clerical abuse until he meets with the world’s episcopal conferences in February destroyed any possibility of progress at this week’s meeting of the US Bishops.

Amid the resulting deference, the bishops could not even pass a resolution to encourage Vatican candor on the abusive Cardinal McCarrick.

USCCB President Cardinal Di Nardo could say only that the US bishops will take strongest possible actions at the earliest possible moment.
