Human culture has taken it on the chin lately. For example, one could argue that American culture has been steadily eroded by religious decline, commercialism, the replacement of personal relationships with technology, excessive mobility, and bureaucratic tinkering.

Then there is the European Union, which seems intent on emptying Europe of both national cultures and its own common culture. It is this that prompted me to write The scandal of the particular: The Christian essence of human culture.

Culture in the Church herself has suffered much over the past few generations. It depends a great deal on the relationship between discipline and doctrine. Phil Lawler has been wondering about this very point in anticipating the forthcoming synodal apostolic exhortation on the family:
