Two small but intriguing stories have provoked commentary over the past few days. For example, it has just been announced that last year's special collection produced $24 million for retired religious.

Without intending to diminish anyone's charity, I can't help but comment on this in On the Culture: $24 million for retired religious? Therein hangs a tale.

We also learned late Friday that the Congregation for Divine Worship has issued instructions to tone down the Sign of Peace at Mass.

On this point, Phil Lawler, who is taking some time off this week, could not resist firing a parting shot: Another argument for reform in the Roman Curia....
