I Found My Ovulation Suppressants at Kmart!

By Diogenes ( articles ) | Jan 08, 2004

From the Weight of Glory blog, good news of one man who has planted a flag in the sand.

While working as an independent contracting pharmacist at a Kmart pharmacy in Menomonie, WI, I asserted a conscientious objection to a 22 year old female who was seeking hormonal contraception (birth control pills) for the indication of preventing pregnancy as I confirmed with her in a private area away from other customers. I was working alone at the time. The next day while I again was working alone I received a call from a store manager telling me that I was "sending babies to the dumpsters" as well as destroying Kmart's business. Shortly after that, the patient arrived with two armed police officers. She was again requesting that I help her obtain her birth control pills even after I explained to her the day before that I could not do so with a clear conscience. I did not yield my position. The officers took no direct action. I received the formal complaint a few weeks later. My initial hearing was scheduled December 18th, 2003 but was moved to January 22, 2004 and will likely be moved again to sometime around February 26, 2004. Thanks for your prayers! There are thousands of us pharmacists in this same situation. I should add that Kmart was not at all at fault for this. This complaint came directly from the patient. The Kmart pharmacy manager was actually very supportive of my actions.
