The future belongs to the families that reproduce

By Phil Lawler ( bio - articles - email ) | Sep 22, 2004

Arch-liberal columnist Ellen Goodman of the Boston Globe thinks it's foolish for liberals to worry about the statistics showing that conservatives have more children.

It's nice that Goodman doesn't propose restraining the right of conservatives to procreate. She think it's OK for us to have babies, because those babies will grow up to read Boston Globe columnists, and she's confident of converting them into liberals by the time they're old enough to vote.

In fact, maybe too confident. My children aren't turning into liberals; they've been inoculated against the sort of logic (if you can call it that) that the Boston Globe employs.

But if you start worrying about the mini-baby-boom among conservative Christian families, you're forced to look at the flip side of that story: the liberals who are aborting and contracepting themselves into oblivion. Liberals aren't ready to do that.

So Ellen Goodman says that liberals shouldn't worry about it. I think they should be worried. But they're not listening to me.
