If a priest tries to dispense with medieval tradition and, instead, substitute something else (such as "Good morning" or "Good evening" or "Hello Folks" or even warm, welcoming remarks), he might really be trying to say "Ta-dah! Here I am, the corporation of one." If he tries to top the congregation's line (if I may use an expression from the theater) with a sincere "Thank you," he is comitting sabotage; he is trying to take over sole control of the corporation.
