At the St. Joseph's Day Party...
By Dr. Jeff Mirus ( bio - articles - email ) | Mar 19, 2012
While we are celebrating I've decided to run a quick contest. The following little limerick was brought to my attention in a recent issue of First Things, which included an article on the pantheist philosopher Spinoza. The limerick was written by Clare Coffey, a student at Dartmouth who has (self-evidently) a rich appreciation for the best of American culture. Kudos to the first reader who, not having seen this elsewhere, can identify the prior work that provided the poetic inspiration for this limerick:

Spinozes supposes that God is the roses
But Spinozes supposes erroneously.
For Moses, he shows us
That God ain’t the roses—
What Spinozes supposes is idolatry.

"He cannot be characterized as a very shrewd observer." That's good. Really good.

Farrell's unusual promotion is an act of Francis' "complete indifference to public perceptions," which feels as a slap in the face. One after another.

The post of camerlengo sits vacant for months, then is filled suddenly at a moment, and with a man, that even Francis must know is awkward. I wouldn’t be surprised if Francis were to resign soon, now that a reliable flunky is on duty to stage-manage the election of a new Pope.

It sounds like "Moses Supposes His Toeses are Roses" from Singin' In The Rain, but I don't know if that tongue-twister had appeared prior to that movie.
