Irish university approves embryonic stem-cell research; bishop decries vote
October 30, 2008
University College- Cork has become the first Irish institution to authorize embryonic stem-cell research, with a narrow faculty vote that has drawn sharp criticism from Archbishop Dermot Clifford of Cashel. The archbishop argued: "It is wrong to conduct research on embryonic stem cells and such research should be prohibited by law. It is contrary to the ethical and moral teaching of the Catholic Church because it is contrary to the common good."
