Church, state leaders decry Italian politician's barbed remark about Cardinal Tettamanzi

Leaders of both Church and state in Italy—including Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican Secretary of State, and President Giorgio Napolitano—have come to the support of Milan’s Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, after the cardinal was criticized by a leader of the conservative Northern League. The cardinal came under fire from the Northern League because of his statements in support of Muslim immigrants. In an editorial that appeared in La Padania, a daily produced by that political party, Roberto Calderoli questioned whether Cardinal Tettamanzi is “the bishop of Milan or the imam of Milan.”
