Study shows damaging effects of pornography
December 03, 2009
A new study by the Family Research Council (FRC) shows that pornography has a damaging effect on individuals, families, and their communities. The use of pornography is a “pathway to infidelity and divorce,” writes researcher Patrick Fagan, noting that married men who view pornography become emotionally detached from their wives and lose interest in their families.
Pornography use is addictive, the study finds, and “neuroscientists are beginning to map the biological substrate of this addiction.” Regular users tend to become absorbed in pornography, and as their use increases they seek more perverse forms of visual excitement. The use of pornography is strongly linked to sexual crimes including rape and child abuse.
The FRC study examines the impact of sexually oriented businesses on local communities, and finds that the presence of porn shops generally depresses neighborhood property values and raises the level of crime.
