Catholic University of America president to step down
November 20, 2009
Father David M. O’Connell, the Vincentian canon lawyer who worked to restore the Catholic identity of the Catholic University of America, is stepping down after a dozen years in office.
Father O’Connell told the US bishops at their fall meeting that it is “no secret that Catholic University struggled with its identity at times in the not too distant past and that these struggles resulted in a certain alienation from you-- the bishops who sponsor the university-- for many years.” Once renowned for providing a platform for dissenting theologian Father Charles Curran, Catholic University has joined the Cardinal Newman Society’s list of faithful Catholic colleges.
