Will Polish president sign Lisbon Treaty? Opinions differ
October 08, 2009
Polish President Lech Kaczynski has expressed misgivings about the Lisbon Treaty, which would re-define the terms of membership in the European Union. But some sources in Warsaw indicate that Kaczynski will nevertheless approve the treaty, eliminating one of the final hurdles to its implementation. However, the president's twin brother, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, has contradicted the reports. The president will be in Rome this weekend, Jaroslaw Kaczynski told reporters, and will not be available to sign the treaty.
Poland is one of two European nations that have not yet agreed to the terms of the Lisbon Treaty-- which won ratification in Ireland by a clear majority vote in a referendum last week. In the Czech Republic, the nation's highest court is weighing whether the terms of the treaty violate the country's own constitution.
