New archbishop named for Birmingham, England

October 01, 2009

Bishop Bernard Longley, an auxiliary of the Westminster archdiocese, has been named by Pope Benedict XVI to become Archbishop of Birmingham. The Birmingham see, already one of the most prominent in Britain, will command extra attention in the coming year, as it plays host to the visiting Pope Benedict and-- perhaps at the same time-- the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman.

Archbishop-elect Longley, a 54-year-old native of Manchester, succeeds Archbishop Vincent Nichols, who was installed in May as Archbishop of Westminster and primate of the Catholic Church in England.
