Pro-life legislators ask Speaker Pelosi to schedule vote on abortion funding
October 01, 2009
A group of 183 members of the US House of Representatives have written to the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, calling for a vote on an amendment that would bar abortion funding in the health-care reform bill. Noting that the bill currently pending in Congress "radically departs from current federal government policy of not paying for elective abortion or subsidizing plans that cover abortion," the lawmakers-- including representatives of both major political parties-- argue that the Speaker should "allow members of the House to vote their consciences" before scheduling a final vote on the reform package.
