Disgraced Zimbabwe archbishop alleges assassination attempt, continued harassment

September 02, 2009

Archbishop Pius Ncube, who resigned in 2007 following an affair with a married woman, has alleged in a letter to South Africa’s national Catholic weekly newspaper that the government of President Robert Mugabe has attempted to kill him. The outspoken critic of the Mugabe regime, who provided details of an apparent assassination attempt that took place in 2008, says that he is being followed, that his phone and fax line have been tampered with, and that “every two weeks the state intelligence is there to visit me.”

“In compliance with the suggestions from the Vatican,” the archbishop said that he is not publicly criticizing the government, “a thing which is alien to my convictions.”
