Florida's Catholic bishops call for halt to execution
August 18, 2009
The Catholic bishops of Florida have issued a plea to Governor Charlie Crist to stay the execution of a convicted rapist and murderer, Richard Marek, which is scheduled for August 19. “Life in prison without possibility of parole satisfies the need for punishment and allows the inmates the opportunity to reflect on their offenses and feel sorrow for the pain they have caused others,” the bishops argued. They added that the use of the death penalty does not safeguard society, but contributes a culture of violence.
