British Catholic paper welcomes pending beatification of Cardinal Newman
July 10, 2009
Announcing that Pope Benedict has "announced the beatification" of Cardinal John Henry Newman, the Catholic Herald quotes Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster: "I am delighted to learn this news."
A bit of clarification is in order: The Pope has approved a decree attesting to a miracle through the intercession of Cardinal Newman. This miracle fulfills the requirements for the beatification of the 19th-century apologist. However the Vatican has not yet announced a date for the beatification ceremony.
