Pope surveys 15 years of progress in Vatican-Mexican relations

Pope Benedict XVI greeted a new ambassador from Mexico to the Holy See on July 10, and saluted the "important progress made over recent years in the good relations between the Holy See and Mexico." After decades of virulent anti-clericalism, the Mexican government in the 1990s eased restrictions on public manifestations of Catholicism and re-established diplomatic ties with the Vatican. In his remarks to the new envoy, Hector Federico Ling Altamirano, Pope Benedict observed that the Catholic faith formed the backbone of traditional Mexican culture.
