Vatican, Israel continue talks toward long-awaited pact
July 10, 2009
Negotiators working to finalize a diplomatic accord between Israel and the Holy See met in Jerusalem on July 9 "in an atmosphere of great cordiality," the Vatican reports. The commission scheduled further working sessions for August, September, October, and November, leading up to a plenary meeting in December.
Earlier this year, Vatican diplomats had voiced some optimism that the long-overdue pact, establishing the economic and juridical rights of the Church in the Holy Land, might finally be concluded prior to visit by Pope Benedict to Israel. Negotiations speeded up with that end in sight, but have returned to a normal pace after the papal trip.
