Cardinal Martini backs Pope's call for renewal of Confession
June 23, 2009
Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini-- the retired Archbishop of Milan who for years has been the leading voice of liberalism in the European Catholic hierarchy-- has indicated his strong endorsement of the call by Pope Benedict XVI for a revival of the sacrament of Penance. In an interview with the Italian daily Repubblica, Cardinal Martini said with regret that interest in Confession has become "anemic," and the sacrament "must again be given a substance that is truly sacramental."
In the same interview, Cardinal Martini said that the most important issue facing the Church is the status of divorced people; he suggested a council to focus on that particular issue.
