Ohio Governor Kasich vetoes one pro-life bill, signs another into law

December 14, 2016

Governor John Kasich of Ohio has vetoed a bill that would have banned abortion after the fetal heartbeat was detected, but signed into law a bill banning abortion after the 20th week of pregnancy.

Kasich, who had run for the Republican presidential nomination as a pro-life candidate, said that the legislation would not have survived a Supreme Court challenge. Pro-life activists vowed that they would seek to persuade state legislators to overturn the veto and defend the law before the US Supreme Court if necessary.

Governor Kasich signed a separate piece of pro-life legislation: a bill that bans abortion after the 20th week of pregnancy. The bill provides for exceptions if the mother’s life is in danger.
