Continued Israeli media criticism of Pontiff; praise from newspapers elsewhere
May 14, 2009
Amid continued Israeli media criticism of Pope Benedict’s address at Yad Vashem-- with the notable exception of an op-ed in Ha’aretz-- the San Francisco Examiner has published a strong defense of Pope Benedict’s words in Israel. “The man visits the Holy Land, deplores current and historical violence and bigotry against Jews, and is rudely slapped in the media for not saying it in exactly the way, and at the precise time, that some demand,” observes Meghan Cox Gurdon.
In the Middle East, a Jordan Times editorial praised the Pope’s call for a Palestinian state, while the United Arab Emirates-based Khaleej Times opined that the Pope’s words would have little effect.
