Pope arrives in Jordan, salutes inter-faith efforts
May 08, 2009
Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Amman, Jordan, on May 8 to begin a week-long visit to the Middle East. Upon his arrival, he repeated that he was traveling primarily as a pilgrim, "to venerate holy places that have played such an important part in some of the key events of biblical history." Greeted by King Abdullah II and Queen Rania, the Pontiff saluted Jordan for its recognition of religious freedom and its efforts to promote peace in the region. He emphasized the value of inter-religious dialogue, and said that his visit gave him another opportunity "to speak of my deep respect for the Muslim community."
