Vatican confirms new talks with Beijing

October 29, 2015

The Vatican Secretary of State has confirmed reports of new talks between the Holy See and the government of China.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin told reporters that a delegation from the Vatican traveled to Beijing earlier this month. He characterized the development as “very positive.”

“It is part of a process aimed at normalization of relations,” the cardinal said. He declined to speculate about the likely outcome of the diplomatic encounter, but said: “The sheer fact we are able to talk about it is significant.”
