Mother Teresa's nuns drop adoption services in India because of legal guidelines

October 12, 2015

The Missionaries of Charity will no longer provide adoption services in India, because of a new law that would allow for adoption by single people and divorced couples.

"We have voluntarily given up our recognized status to run adoption centers," announced the religious order founded by Mother Teresa. The Missionaries of Charity said that their decision was prompted by new "Guidelines Governing Adoption of Children," which require agencies to work with a centralized data base to facilitate adoptions.

If this can happen in India after all Mother Teresa and her nuns have done there it won't be long before all Catholic (capital C) adoption ministries in the US will be forced to close. The silver lining will be more nuns to serve in parochial schools.
