Europe’s bishops call for greater respect for Roma people

April 07, 2015

The president of the Council of the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe has issued a statement calling for greater respect for the Romani (or Roma) people, who are sometimes referred to as Gypsies.

“Jesus Christ has called us to proclaim the good news to everyone, but especially to the poor and marginalized,” Cardinal Péter Erdo said in a joint statement with the Anglican leader of the Conference of European Churches. “We appeal to our communities to become more and more open toward the Roma people, who are often excluded and live in poverty at the margins of society.”

“The present situation of too many Roma people throughout Europe is deplorable. Major problems include antiziganism [prejudice against the Romani] in speech and action across Europe, high unemployment, lack of professional training and, consequently, utter poverty,” he added.
