Vatican plans €2 million program to fight Ebola; Pope makes €500,000 gift
March 18, 2015
Pope Francis has sent a donation of €500,000 (about $550,000) to support the fight against the Ebola epidemic in western Africa.
The papal gift, which will be administered by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, will be used to expand health-care facilities, offer support for the families of victims, and help local parishes develop practices that will minimize the risk of contagion.
Cardinal Peter Turkson, the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, said that his office is now seeking matching grants from other donors, and hopes to collect over $2 million for the project. His office is now accepting grant applications from African institutions involved in fighting the Ebola crisis.
