20 Christians kidnapped in Libya
January 05, 2015
Members of the Ansar al-Sharia militia kidnapped 20 Egyptian Christians in the coastal Libyan city of Sirte, according to a report by Saudi-based Arab News.
Ansar al-Sharia, which means “partisans of Islamic law,” is allied with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
In 2011, a NATO intervention in Libya helped lead to the overthrow of strongman Muammar Gaddafi; the nation now is experiencing a civil war with several belligerents, some of which are radically Islamist.
